3 Good Things

1. The fruit scones I suddenly threw together for yesterdays tea. I've not made scones for years and had to haul the recipe book off the shelf. Rushed job but delicious. I think I'm getting back my interest in cooking which seems to have deserted me over the last few months.

2. The amelanchier which has been a beautiful colour this last week or so. We don't often enjoy autumnal tints here abouts as the climate is damp and mild - usually the leaves fall suddenly without turning colour first. [Updated 10/10/07 for photo see this post : but the leaves have fallen now]

3. I was planning to learn how to play bridge. I was looking forward to it. A new challenge and a social occasion too. But the lessons were suddenly cancelled the day before we were due to start. I now hear they are thinking of re-instating them. I don't know if I'm coming or going.... But if the lessons fail to start I have bought 2 books on 'Teach Yourself Bridge' and have been invited to watch a game. So a start on a new interest.

good for you, thinker. I'm sittinghere feeling really gloomy so that has cheered me up no end. I shall do it myself!

Hmm. Bridge is good for stimulating the brain but it can be brutal to the ego. You need to be ruthless to win. Have you considered a poker night instead?

(Were you joking about the "crack me up" expression? It means "make me laugh". No drug ref!)

Flower - sorry to hear you're still a bit low spirits - plan on something new to look forward to for when you're fully recovered.

Tobeee - yes I was joking about the expression - perhaps I should have planted a smiley next to it? But I'm rather pleased that you weren't too sure about it! I'm a bit of a teaser. Does that make me 'ruthless' enough for bridge?? Some friends play it in a gossipy fun way - but I have a feeling I'll end up quite competitive. My main problem is I'm not sure I'm much of a team player and having a partner might not suit me... we'll see.
Poker wouldn't interest me unless for MONEY - not many gamblers floating around east Devon - there are too many retirees on pensions...
Nice to chat with you again. 8-) x

Raindrops on roses is my favourite thing, followed in a close second place by bright coloured kittens in warm woolen mittens made from copper whiskers.

Just so you know...

Helly again Meryw - do you think there is any chance that if I play really really well I'll get to meet Omar Sharif? Dream on ...

Hello Chipn, nice to see you - thanks for your favourite things - now I'll know....

I thought I had commented here earlier but I don't see it so I here I go. :) I'm glad you are regaining your interest in cooking. There is something satisfying and homey about steaming up the kitchen and warming the house while filling it with the odors of yummy things to eat.

I've tried to learn bridge and Whist I think it's called. I have no head for those games where you have to win "tricks" or whatever they call it. But if it's a game, you know I'll try it and have fun anyway. Just may not win. But that is not always where the fun is. I'd like to hear about it if you do get to play.

If you find a good partner, you could suggest penny-a-point to your gossipy bridge friends. I bet they'd go for that. When you've hot the hang of it and they've beaten you enough, you can up the stake to pound-a-point and clean out those east Devon pension funds!
